    Exhaust System

An auto exhaust system is a series of components that route combustion gases away from the engine, reduce harmful emissions, and minimize noise. Key parts include the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, exhaust pipes, mufflers/resonators, and the tailpipe

    • Exhaust Manifold: Collects gases from the engine cylinders into a single pipe.
    • Oxygen (O2) Sensors: Monitor exhaust gases to help the engine computer adjust the air-fuel mixture for efficiency.
    • Catalytic Converter: Converts harmful pollutants (like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides) into less harmful gases (carbon dioxide and water vapor).
    • Exhaust Pipes & Flex Pipe: Connect the components; flex pipes allow engine movement to prevent damage.
    • Muffler & Resonator: Use chambers and baffles to reduce engine noise.
    • Tailpipe: The final pipe that releases exhaust gases safely away from the vehicle.
    • Miscellaneous: Includes hangers, gaskets, and heat shields to support the system and protect the undercarriage

Bad exhaust symptoms include a noticeably louder engine, ticking noises when cold, reduced fuel efficiency, a strong smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin, and reduced engine power. Other signs include a check engine light, vibrations while accelerating, and visible rust or hanging pipes.

It can cause poor air flow (specifically, restricted air flow through the engine), resulting in sluggish acceleration, reduced power, and poor fuel economy. A clogged or blocked system prevents the engine from effectively expelling exhaust gases, leading to increased backpressure. This restriction forces the engine to work harder, which causes it to “choke” and prevents it from breathing properly

While we’re there, let us perform a Courtesy Check, which includes a visual check of the following items:

    • Engine air filter
    • Brake fluid
    • Power steering fluid
    • Automatic transmission fluid
    • Coolant/antifreeze
