When do tires need to be replaced?

You need new tires when the tread depth drops below 2/32 of an inch, if you see visible cracks or bulges in the sidewall, or if the tires are over 6–10 years old. Use the “penny test” by placing a penny in the tread; if you see all of Lincoln’s head, you need new tires.

Key indicators its time for new tires

  1. Tread Depth: Tires are legally bald at 2/32 of an inch, which is when the top of Lincoln’s head is visible in the penny test.
  2. Tread Wear Bars: Built-in bars in the tire grooves appear flush with the surface when the tire is worn out.
  3. Sidewall Damage: Cracks, cuts, or dry rot in the rubber indicate it is time to replace tires.
  4. Bulges or Bubbles: A bulge on the tire sidewall indicates a break in the internal structure, requiring immediate replacement to avoid a blowout.
  5. Uneven Tread Wear: Tread that is more worn on one edge or in the center indicates poor alignment or improper inflation, often requiring replacement.
  6. Vibrations or Noise: Excessive shaking or new thumping noises while driving, even at low speeds, can indicate tire damage or structural failure.

If you find any of these issues, take your vehicle to a qualified tire professional immediately for an inspection and to avoid unsafe driving conditions
